Dog Calorie Calculator
Calculate the daily energy requirements for your canine companion based on weight and activity level.
Your dog's estimated daily requirement:
How Many Calories Does My Dog Need?
Feeding your dog the right amount of food is crucial for preventing obesity, which is the leading cause of health issues in domestic pets. Our Dog Calorie Calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, which is the baseline energy needed for essential body functions like breathing and digestion.
The calculation is based on the metabolic weight of your dog. We take the weight in kilograms, raise it to the 0.75 power, and multiply it by 70. We then apply a multiplier based on your dog's specific life stage and activity level to find their Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER).
A 20kg (44lb) neutered adult dog:
1. RER = 70 × (20^0.75) ≈ 661 kcal/day.
2. MER = 661 × 1.6 (Neutered multiplier) = 1,058 kcal/day.
Understanding Activity Multipliers
Every dog is unique. A sedentary Bulldog will require significantly fewer calories than a Border Collie training for agility. Here is how we categorize the multipliers:
- Neutered Adult (1.6): The standard for most indoor family pets.
- Intact Adult (1.8): Dogs that have not been fixed generally have a slightly higher metabolic rate.
- Weight Loss (1.0): Used under veterinary supervision to help overweight dogs reach a healthy goal.
- Puppies (2.0 – 3.0): Young dogs require massive amounts of energy for rapid bone and tissue growth.
Tips for Using This Calculator
Always check the calorie count on your specific dog food bag (measured as kcal/kg or kcal/cup). Divide the daily requirement calculated here by the calories per cup to determine the exact portion size. Remember to include treats in your total daily calorie count, as treats should not exceed 10% of a dog's total intake.
